Gifts from the Garden

A Journey into Natural Dyeing
Last winter, I allowed myself to slow down, learn, and immerse myself in the world of natural dyes through the Natural Dye Workshop at MAIWA School of Textiles.

MAIWA has spent more than 30 years sharing traditional textile techniques, cultural knowledge, and the work of artisans from around the world. Their philosophy that the need to create is universal deeply resonates with me. Their online resources offer an incredible opportunity to explore the history, traditions, and practices behind these time-honored crafts.
During my studies, I explored the foundations of natural dyeing, learning about mordants, tannins, natural dyes, exhaust baths, overdyeing, iron shifts, and indigo. I learned how to successfully mordant cellulose and protein fibers to achieve vibrant, clear colors using classic natural dyes.

There is so much more to this process than simply adding color to cloth. It is a study in chemistry, patience, experimentation, cultural tradition, and allowing nature to surprise you.
For me, this journey began with a desire to expand my farm’s offerings and extend the growing season beyond the flowers in the field. I wanted to discover new ways to work with natural materials, experiment with different techniques, and carry the beauty of the garden into other creative forms.

The result has been a small-batch collection of hand-dyed silk hankies, bandannas, and scrunchies. Each piece moves through its own journey, from textile preparation to dyeing, rinsing, drying, and that final moment when I see what the process has revealed.
No two pieces are alike. I’ve come to appreciate the variations, unexpected colors, and beautiful imperfections that make each one unique. The hankies hold a special place in my heart. I love the idea of giving our tears a beautiful place to land, whether they come from overwhelming joy, a tender goodbye, or the quiet moments when words simply aren't enough.

Experience Gifts from the Garden in person
I'm currently offering this collection at The Loft in the Camano Commons on Camano Island. If you haven't visited this wonderful local destination, consider this your invitation! The Camano Commons is more than a delicious bakery; it's a destination eatery with a collection of local artisans' creations and more! Touch the textiles, appreciate the colors and textures up close, and find a piece that speaks to you.

These small-batch creations are available while supplies last, and experiencing the uniqueness of each piece in person is part of the joy.
Treat yourself or gift a friend. Take home a little piece of the garden's story.
