Weaving Community: The Story Behind the Flower Tapestry

Every August, one of Snohomish County’s favorite traditions returns, Farm Tours.

For one special weekend each year, local farms open their gates and invite the community to step onto the land. Visitors can meet the farmers and ranchers who grow their food and flowers, tour working farms, learn new skills, discover local agriculture, and experience firsthand the passion and dedication that sustain our rural communities.

Farm Tours is more than a weekend of activities. It is an invitation to slow down, ask questions, build relationships, and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who care for the land.

At Floral Current, we believe flowers have a unique way of bringing people together.

In 2023, I introduced the Community Flower Tapestry with a simple idea: What if visitors contributed just a few flowers, and together we wove a living tapestry celebrating the beauty of locally grown seasonal blooms?

Throughout the day, children, grandparents, gardeners, artists, and first-time flower lovers gathered around a simple wire frame, each weaving in a handful of blooms. As the hours passed, the tapestry grew, not because of any one person’s contribution, but because everyone added something uniquely their own.

Watching strangers laugh, create, and connect over flowers reminded us that beauty isn’t just something we admire. Sometimes it’s something we build together.

The following year, Floral Current transformed Arlington’s Legion Park with a spectacular flower-covered arbor featuring blooms grown by our member farms. Floral Current farmers generously donated every stem, creating a breathtaking installation that celebrated both the beauty of locally grown flowers and the generosity of our flower farmer community.

The arbor became a favorite gathering place where families paused to take photographs, celebrate the beauty of locally grown flowers, and create lasting memories together.

This year, we’re excited to bring the Community Flower Tapestry back to Historic Downtown Arlington during Farm Tours.

Everyone is welcome. This free, all-ages community art experience invites you to leave your mark on a living work of art.

We invite you to bring a few flowers from your own garden, or weave in fresh seasonal blooms generously provided by Floral Current farmers.

Then take a moment to slow down.

Notice the incredible diversity of flowers, the colors, textures, shapes, and fragrances.

Discover a variety you’ve never seen before. Appreciate the beauty of the season.

As each person adds their flowers, the tapestry will continue to evolve throughout the day and throughout the Farm Tours weekend. No two moments will look the same, making the installation as alive and flourishing as the community creating it.

For us, the tapestry has always represented something much bigger than flowers.

It reminds us that every farm has a story.

Every flower has a purpose.

Every person has something valuable to contribute.

Just as no two flowers are alike, every person brings something unique to our community. One stem at a time, we weave a tapestry that is far more beautiful than any one of us could create alone.

Whether you bring flowers from your own garden, add a bloom provided by one of our growers, or stop to admire what our community creates together, we hope you’ll take a moment to become part of the story.
